How much does it cost to implement an online store using various technologies?

As for implementation budgets, you should assume that costs usually are:

  • WooCommerce from about 5.000 to 16.250 EUR
  • PrestaShop from about 15.000 to 40.000 EUR
  • Shopify from about 12.500 to 42.500 EUR
  • Shopware from about 62.500 to 87.500 EUR
  • Magento from about 65.000 to 112.500 EUR

If you’re curious about where these budgets come from, keep reading.

Problem with information about technology implementation costs

Finding concrete details on the costs of implementing specific technology is difficult. They circulate in the market but often are just snippets. One podcast might reveal bits of information, an agency’s website another. For example, blog posts provide more fragments about the hours needed to develop ecommerce based on a particular engine.

Gathering all this information is quite a challenge. However, I have good news – I’ve done this work for you. Over the past few months, I’ve scoured different types of content. I reviewed various agency websites, listened to many podcasts, and watched several videos. I spoke with ecommerce agency managers. Altogether, this took me several dozen hours of work. Thanks to this, you no longer need to spend time on this task.

I have prepared a table that presents the approximate price ranges in which implementation budgets for different ecommerce technologies most commonly fall.

So, do not treat the presented data as precise information; your online store with specific technical specifications will cost that much. However, assessing whether a given technology fits within your budget is a good starting point.

Costs of implementing online stores: assumptions

Initially, there were a few critical issues concerning the assumptions to make everything understandable. Remember to treat these data as qualitative—after all, I did not conduct any survey. I simply collected qualitative information from the market and presented it in a simple comparison.

Estimated budgets

Remember that the presented values do not mean your project will cost precisely as indicated. These are ranges where projects implemented in the given technology most commonly fall.

This, however, will give you a rough idea of costs, helping you decide whether to consider a particular technology based on its benefits or if it is beyond your financial assumptions and should not be considered at this stage of your business development.

Scope of Functionality

Another crucial point is that the functional scope of implementations is not the same. You can’t expect a WooCommerce implementation for 10,000 euros and a Magento implementation for 100,000 euros to have the same scope and offer the same features. Generally, those who opt for Magento usually have higher functionality requirements. Thus, most Magento store offers usually involve higher amounts.

Third-party template vs. Custom graphic design

I have differentiated between stores based on custom graphic design and those using a template. Stores using third-party templates or graphic designs are cheaper than those for creating a custom graphic design.

Implementation stages

The scope of activities and how the online store is implemented are similar across different agencies.

The process always starts with pre-implementation analysis (during this stage, graphic designs are prepared). Then comes coding and configuration, followed by testing. Then, data migration is conducted. The next stage includes UAT (User Acceptance Testing). After that, the store is launched. A Project Manager controls the project throughout the online store’s implementation.

Implementation done by ecommerce agencies

A freelancer may implement ecommerce, which likely leads to lower costs. I analyzed the most common implementation budgets for this technology in ecommerce agencies.

I focused on highly rated agencies, using reviews on Clutch and Google Maps as well as market recommendations. Thus, the presented ranges concern the costs of implementation by agencies of verifiable quality and reputation.

Please review the short table, which does not require detailed discussion.

Of course, if new information appears, I will update this data (but certainly not more often than once every six months—finding this information took a lot of time).
